How long has Sunrise Mission been in Alpena?

Sunrise Mission was founded in 1989 by a group of local churches in conjunction with the Department of Human Service of the State of Michigan. The mission has been located at 622 W. Chisholm Alpena, MI since 1995.

 What communities are served by the Sunrise Mission?

The mission has one location. Most clients we serve are from the counties of Alpena, Presque Isle, Montmorency and Alcona. However there are no geographic restrictions.

What is the purpose of the Sunrise Mission?

Families and individuals sometimes have the need for shelter due to no fault of their own. The mission is a channel of Christian charity through temporary shelter, meals, clothing and discipleship. The Sunrise Mission has a maximum capacity of thirty three persons.

Who is helped by the Sunrise Mission?

The Sunrise Mission provides separation of facilities for men and women. We accept families with children. Persons striving to overcome substance abuse, unemployment, and other of life's adversities will be provided with direction to help them gain freedom from these detrimental lifestyles.

How are persons referred to the Sunrise Mission?

Referral is not required; however, referrals are made by the Department of Human Service, churches, community agencies, police, area businesses and private persons. How are people helped?

The services provided by Sunrise Mission are clean warm beds, laundry facilities, food pantry, showers and a complete kitchen. Separate men's and women's facilities are maintained at the Mission. Christian counseling and referral to other community resources help clients find employment, permanent housing and hope.

What are the Sunrise Mission's hours of operation?

Sunrise Mission is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Clients leave during the day to pursue opportunities for employment and other of life's independence needs. During the winter months, when severely cold temperatures prevail, the mission extends its hours.

Who pays the bills?

Charitable donations from churches, civic groups, foundations, businesses, and Department of Human Services(state of Michigan) all give money for operational and maintenance costs. All gifts are tax deductible. Sunrise Mission files #990 tax forms with the Federal Government every year. Donations may be sent to our P.O. Box #493, Alpena, MI 49707.

Who governs the Sunrise Mission?

The Sunrise Mission, Inc. is a private, nonprofit corporation. It is governed by a volunteer board of directors. They represent a variety of denominations and vocations. The mission is a completely separate corporate entity. It shares no assets or facilities with any other organization or .individual.
